Workday shows “failed” for a passed course: the fix

Updated 16 October 2026

Quick fix

Course authors report that Workday Learning shows a grade of “failed” for courses that report Completed/Incomplete, even when the learner did well. The course never sends a pass result, and Workday appears to read that as a fail.

  • The course has a scored quiz: report Passed/Failed (or Passed/Incomplete) from the quiz and republish. Steps.
  • No quiz: ask your Workday admin how completion-only courses are graded. More.
  • It already reports passed/failed: the usual cause is a mastery score in the manifest that differs from the quiz pass mark. See mastery score vs quiz passing score.

Drop the zip into Alder (free, nothing is uploaded): after a test run it shows whether Workday Learning would record your course differently.

Report a pass from the quiz in Storyline, Rise or Captivate

These steps make a scored quiz decide the result, so Workday gets a pass. They are the same steps Alder's note gives.

  1. Storyline

Open Publish → LMS / LRS → Reporting and Tracking. On the Tracking tab, tick “When the learner completes a quiz” and check that your result slide is listed. On the LMS tab, set “Report status to LMS as:” to “Passed/Failed” or “Passed/Incomplete”.
  2. Rise

Open Publish → LMS. Under Tracking, choose “Track using quiz result” and pick the quiz. Under Reporting, set “Report completion status as:” to “Passed/Failed” or “Passed/Incomplete”.
  3. Captivate

In Captivate 12 and later, open Preferences → Quizzing → Reporting, set “Completion Criteria” to use the quiz (“Quiz is Passed”), and tick “Success Criteria” with the quiz chosen there too. In Captivate Classic, open Quiz → Quiz Preferences → Reporting, choose “Quiz” under “Success/Completion Criteria”, and set “Status Representation” to “Incomplete ---> Passed/Failed”.
  4. Republish and check again

Publish again, drop the new zip into Alder with Workday Learning picked, and repeat the test run: the note is gone and Workday's dot matches SCORM Cloud. Then test one learner in Workday before rollout.

No quiz in the course

A course tracked by slides viewed has nothing to pass, so there is no pass result to send. Ask your Workday admin how completion-only courses are graded there, and test one learner before rollout.

Check the zip before you upload it again (free)

Workday Learning is one of the three LMSs whose notes are free in Alder, with SAP SuccessFactors and Moodle. Learners marked failed? Check your course for this.

  1. Drop the published zip

Open Alder and drop the zip. It is read in your browser; nothing is uploaded. For Storyline, Rise and Captivate, Alder reads the reporting choice from the package itself.
  2. Run it once in the test player

Click “Launch the course”, finish it as a learner would, and click “I'm done”. If the course completes without saying passed or failed, Workday Learning's dot under the result says “differs”, even before you pick it.
Alder's Worth checking line after a test run: Workday Learning would record it differently. A dot marks Workday Learning as differs, with a link to choose it under Uploading to and see why for free, and the source: an E-Learning Heroes thread on Completed/Incomplete courses returning a grade of failed.
A test course that reports completed and no result: Workday Learning is the LMS that differs.
  3. Pick Workday Learning to see why

Choose Workday Learning under “Uploading to”. The note says what the course sends, why Workday may show “failed”, and how to change it for your authoring tool.
Alder's Worth checking card: Workday Learning may show a failed grade for learners who passed. The course sends no pass result, and Workday reads that as a fail. The fix: report passed/failed or passed/incomplete from a scored quiz, or ask the Workday admin how completion-only courses are graded.

What Alder doesn't know about Workday

Alder's Workday profile is built from those course author reports only. For status and score it predicts what SCORM Cloud records. Threads also report Workday showing the wrong score (a thread on Storyline scores in Workday); Alder doesn't model that.

Why it happens

The course reports completion but no result. A SCORM course can tell the LMS two separate things: whether the learner finished (completed or incomplete) and whether they passed (passed or failed). Authoring tools let you choose which pair the course reports. With Completed/Incomplete, the course only ever says “completed”; it never says passed. SCORM Cloud records that as complete with an unknown result, which is why the same package looks fine there.

Workday is reported to read “no pass” as a fail. In threads on E-Learning Heroes, course authors report that Workday Learning gives such courses a grade of “failed” (“Courses with LMS Reporting set to Completed/Incomplete return a grade of ‘failed’ even if course was passed”, “Course Marking Failed in Workday”). Workday's own documentation needs a customer login, so we could not check what it says; this is a reported behaviour, not a tested one.
