SCORM score not recording, or showing 0%, in the LMS

Updated 16 October 2026

Quick fix

Either the course never sent a score, or it sent one the LMS didn't use. A Storyline or Rise course normally sends a score only when it is tracked by a quiz.

  • No score sent: track the course by the quiz, and give the results slide a passing score. Steps.
  • Score sent, LMS shows nothing: the LMS may read a different score field, or need a status with the score. What to check.

Not sure which? Drop the zip into Alder (free, nothing is uploaded). Its test player shows every score the course sends and which field it used, so you can tell in a few minutes.

The course never sent a score

The course isn't tracked by a quiz. A course completed by viewing slides, by a trigger or by Rise's course completion percentage sends no score, even when it reports “passed”. There is nothing for the LMS to show.

The quiz tracking has no scored results slide behind it. In Storyline, tracking by quiz needs a results slide that scores the questions and has a passing score. If the tracking isn't linked to one, the course never works out a pass or fail, so learners stay incomplete, with or without a score. Alder treats this as a blocker.

  1. Track by the quiz

In Storyline, open Publish → LMS / LRS → Reporting and Tracking. On the Tracking tab, tick “When the learner completes a quiz” and check that your results slide is listed (if not, use “+ Add tracked quiz”). In Rise, choose “Track using quiz result” and pick the quiz under “Use results from:”.
  2. Give the results slide a passing score

Open the results slide, then Result Tools—Design → Quiz Settings, and set Passing Score. Make sure every learner reaches that slide after the last question.
  3. Send the score in Captivate

In Captivate Classic, open Quiz → Quiz Preferences → Reporting. Under “Data To Report”, “Quiz Score” can be sent as a percentage or as points.

The course sent a score the LMS didn't use

  • It is in a field the LMS doesn't read. SCORM 1.2 has one score field. SCORM 2004 has two: the percentage, from 0 to 1, which the LMS uses to judge pass or fail, and the points. Docebo's documentation says that for SCORM 2004 it shows the points, so a course that sends only the percentage shows no score there. SCORM Cloud, on its default settings, doesn't treat the points as the percentage either.
  • The score came with no status. A course that sends a score but never says passed, failed or completed leaves the result to the LMS. Some LMSs keep the course incomplete forever, or ignore the score.
  • The LMS refused or dropped it. An LMS drops anything sent after the course has ended its session, so a score sent last is lost. It also refuses values in the wrong format. Both usually come from custom code or a web object, not from a standard publish.
  • The LMS turns the score into a grade. In Canvas, a graded SCORM assignment takes its grade from the score; the UW–Madison help desk reports no grade, a dash, for packages that send none (UW–Madison KB).
Where a quiz score goesA learner scores 80% on the quiz. In SCORM 1.2 the course sends cmi.core.score.raw = 80, out of a score.min of 0 and a score.max of 100. In SCORM 2004 it sends cmi.score.scaled = 0.8, the percentage from 0 to 1, which the LMS judges pass or fail by, and cmi.score.raw = 80, the points, which some LMSs show instead.THE QUIZThe learner scores 80%SCORM 1.2 SENDScmi.core.score.raw80Out of score.min 0 and score.max 100Compared with the mastery score, 0 to 100orSCORM 2004 SENDScmi.score.scaled0.8The percentage, 0 to 1: pass or failcmi.score.raw80The points: some LMSs show this one

Check the zip before you upload it again (free)

Score missing or wrong? Check your course for this. Alder puts the matching problems first and gives you a short test script. After a fix, take the quiz once more on the new zip: the score should appear under “Score” and in the technical log.

  1. Take the quiz in the test player

Open Alder, drop the published zip and launch the course. Take the quiz to its results slide and note the score the course shows you.
  2. Compare it with “Score”

Press “I'm done”. “What an LMS would record” shows the score an LMS would keep, or “No score sent”. If the course sent a score without a status, or after it ended, Alder says so.
Worth checking: The LMS may ignore the score, or record the course as not attempted. The course sent a score but never said passed, failed or completed. How to fix it: have the course set the status when the quiz is submitted.
What Alder shows for a course that sends a score of 90 and no status (Alder's SCORM 1.2 test course).
  3. Find the call in the technical log

Click “Show the technical log”. Every call the course made is listed in plain English, with the exact field and value underneath, so you can see which score field was used and whether the LMS accepted it.
Technical log row 22: The course reported a score of 80. That is below the passing score of 90. LMSSetValue(cmi.core.score.raw, 80) returned true.
The score call from Alder's sample course. Its manifest asks for 90, one of the problems planted in the sample.
  4. Choose your LMS

Pick your LMS under “Uploading to” to see if it would show the score differently. The notes for SAP SuccessFactors, Moodle and Workday Learning are free; the score notes for Docebo and Canvas are part of Pro. The technical log, which is free, already shows which field your course used.

LMS notes

  • Docebo: for SCORM 2004 it reads the points score, not the percentage (Docebo: Uploading and managing SCORM).
  • Canvas: no score can mean no grade for some or all students. Instructure has since added a fallback to complete or incomplete, so it depends on your Canvas version (Canvas community thread).

What it looks like

The LMS shows no score, a dash, or 0%, while the course told the learner they scored 80%. Course authors also report a 0% score next to a completed status (E-Learning Heroes thread).
